Clear communication is the essence of good education. For VMBO students in secondary education especially, visual communication is an intuitive means to grasp complicated matters. The right composition of image and sound, object and explanation, task and context, content and tempo, is an end in itself when exams are being taken.

The designing of a didactical and cognitively responsible visual language of imagery preceded the development of animated assignments and instructions for the taking of exams of VMBO students. The message should not be interrupted. A technical, minimalistic illustration style combined with legible signage, guarantee a soothing environment in which a student can focus.

For designing the animations and illustrations for practical exams of VMBO students, the didactical standard was high. Function was of higher importance than form. To stay on par with the cognitive learning ability level of the young students, a visual language was construed that first and foremost transfers information. The message is thus communicated step-by-step in a minimalistic form.

With careful attention we designed a visual language that prevents students becoming bored at any given time. For, while function is predominant, it does not mean that the imagery may not entice. With a sharp illustration style and a soothing color palette, we designed a style that works in every situation, from abstract 3D technical drawings, to photorealistic presentations. The style is complete, refined and engaging.

Signage, coherence, redundancy and validity: just a few of the themes that serve as conditions for designing exam assignments.

The cognitive load of the students should be such that their learning ability is used in an optimal way while any noise is reduced. All theoretic prescriptions were taken into account for the design.

Whilst selecting the colors and contrasts, we were even aware and mindful of colorblindness and its effects.
